Building upon the legacy of the original Atari 7800, Atari have announced the Atari 7800+. This new console aims to recapture the magic of the classic era of gaming while offering some modern enhancements.
According to the Atari website, the Atari 7800+ boasts backward compatibility with both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. This means you can dust off your old favourites and enjoy them on the new console. On top of that, the Atari 7800+ is also compatible with new cartridges from the Atari XP program, giving you access to a wider library of games.
It share the same technical specifications as the Atari 2600+ packing a Rockchip 3128 SOC microprocessor under the hood. We had no complaints about the performance in our Atari 2600+ review earlier this year. And we expect the newer Atari 2600+ firmware which has received vast improvements for 7800 support to be on the 7800+.
The Atari 7800+ comes bundled with a NEW Wireless CX78+ Gamepad, a Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest 7800 Game Cartridge, an HDMI Cable, and a USB-C Power Cable (wall charging plug not included). The console is also designed to support the CX40+ Joystick and CX30+ Paddle Controllers, which are compatible with original Atari hardware, providing you with more controller options.
The Atari 7800+ Controller Mega Bundle offers a comprehensive gaming experience with its additional accessories. It includes two DB9 Extension Cables for connecting more wired controllers, two CX30+ Paddle Controllers for analogue input games, a CX40+ Joystick for traditional control, and an extra CX78+ Wireless Gamepad for multiplayer fun. This bundle is perfect for those seeking a complete retro gaming setup with various controller options and multiplayer capabilities.
In terms of games, the Atari 7800+ comes with Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, a sequel to the classic Crystal Castles game. This should bring back a wave of nostalgia for gamers who grew up playing the original.
The Atari 7800+ is scheduled to be released 29th November 2024 and is currently available for pre-order at a price of $129.99/£99.99/€119.99 for the standard model and $169.95 for the Mega Bundle. With its support for a wide range of cartridges, powerful processor, and wireless controller, the Atari 7800+ looks like a tempting proposition for retro gaming enthusiasts.
